Mark Paul, Designer, Horticulturalist, GreenWall Specialist.
Twenty years on and with a formidable success rate Mark Paul today produces one off monumental greenwalls that span entire office blocks. By shrouding the built environment in these epiphytic and lithophytic plants he has devised a way that biodiversity and sustainability can be maintained. Through his proven technique, full integration of rainwater, grey water and black water is possible.
Mark Paul’s vision for the “future city” is clear: By dressing buildings and giving these truly unique plants a home and a value, ‘preservation through cultivation’ can make a difference. His utilisation of recycled materials otherwise destined for landfill, means that it is possible to offer sustainable solutions for our cities through broad acre integration and adoption. Through simplified, cost effective industrialisation of the processes and systems available now that are highly achievable.
The majority of The Greenwall Company’s work remains high end residential and commercial properties however they have also completed several public works projects, in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Rio de Janiero.
While the trend amongst architects and designers is still to retrofit existing building sites, the bigger picture is for full integration on proposed developments yet to come. This is where the plants and media become an integral functioning part of the building.Insulating, soundproofing, filtering,recycling,stormwater/ greywater/blackwater, awildlife corridor,a pocket of biodiversity gained not lost.
For Mark Paul it is and has always been about the plants, location, aspect, growth habit, plant communities with similar cultural requirements, meeting their simple needs of light, water and nutrition.
This simple philosophy is backed by years of trials, experimentation and observation of plants in habitat that have led to this winning result.
