With Sydney’s second major airport reported to commence building at Badgery’s Creek in the next few years, the infrastructure surrounding the proposed site is getting a makeover. There will be upgrades to roads, extending train lines with new stations and both commercial and residential developments to help encourage growth in the new area.

As part of the upgrade, The Greenwall Company has been involved in the new South West Rail link project to ‘green’ the new Leppington Station, which is one of the key stations that will serve to improve access to public transport for the people of south-west Sydney.

Mark Paul, founder of The Greenwall Company says, “We are really excited to be a part of this project, especially with the area dubbed as the South West growth centre. As we become more and more environmentally conscious, governments on all levels are recognising the importance of sustainable practices and products when thinking about public building structures.

“For this project, we utilised over 400 EcoPillows to create 12 greenwall panels that run down each of the departure and approach platforms of the rail line. The EcoPillow was a great option to use for this project as they are a pre-grown, fully encased greenwall structure.  They are lightweight and modular in design making them easier to install and also reduces the need for additional structural support,” expressed Mark.

The greenwalls along with other graphic panels highlight the market gardens and agricultural heritage of the area. The greenwall panels help create more green space within the built structures of the station. The greenwall installation will also help contribute to the sustainability of urban ecosystems, providing food and shelter for birds and animals.

Moreover, the benefits of greenwalls and greenroofs go beyond their beauty. Some of the major benefits of installing a greenwall include improved air quality, insulation, energy cost reductions and the lowering of the urban heat island effects.

Over the past 25 years Mark has tested, designed, re-designed, and mastered his greenwalls to ensure they will last the lifetime of the building on which they are installed. The Greenwall Company builds its walls from 94 per cent of recyclable materials that would otherwise be destined for Australian landfill, taking the benefit of their greenwalls even further.

The Greenwall Company has now installed their greenwalls systems in over 200 projects across Australia and overseas, and will continue to work towards they goal of reclaiming the built environment.
